Ever wondered what it’s like to live in a luxury treehouse where the bed is so soft it feels like you’re sinking into a marshmallow, and the in-room bar practically begs you to “treat yourself”? Add to that, breathtaking views that make you consider ditching city life altogether, and you’ve got Tsala Treetop Lodge. We stopped by in February 2024, as part of a road trip along South Africa’s Garden Route, and let me tell you: Tsala makes you feel like you’ve landed the role of a lifetime in your own private treetop escape. Picture this: waking up surrounded by nothing but nature, wine in hand on your deck, pondering whether or not to brave the (surprisingly chilly) plunge pool. Spoiler: I chickened out.
The plunge pool: Looks Instagram-worthy, feels ice-cold
Let’s chat about this plunge pool. When I saw it sitting there among the treetops, it looked like something out of an influencer’s dream. Despite visiting towards the end of the South African summer, I was expecting a refreshing dip in water warmed by months of sunshine. Nope! The water was freezing—like, full-body shock freezing. Sure, it makes for a stunning Instagram shot, but I wasn’t feeling brave enough to take the plunge. Maybe next time?
Zinzi Restaurant: Worth venturing out
Now, if you’re anything like me and food is a top priority, you’ll love that Zinzi Restaurant is just a short walk away from Tsala Treetop Lodge. While Tsala’s fine dining is great for those moments when you want to feel a little posh, Zinzi offers a more relaxed vibe. Think bold flavors, a laid-back atmosphere, and a beautiful outdoor setting where you feel like you’re dining in the heart of nature. It’s worth heading there for at least one night, especially after indulging in Tsala’s fancy palate cleansers. Plus, a change of scenery never hurt anyone.
The bed: So soft you might disappear
About that bed. It’s seriously soft. Imagine a mattress made out of marshmallows, and you’re halfway there. Now, this sounds dreamy in theory, but if you need a bit of support after lounging all day (like I do), you might find it’s a bit much. Not exactly the kind of bed that makes you want to jump out of it in the morning, but hey, it’s perfect for a lazy lie-in and it comes with a full pillow menu. Who even knew that was a thing? Every night, without fail, the staff left a handwritten note on our pillows during turn-down service with a poem, which I found to be a lovely and usual touch.
The in-Room mini-bar: Did someone say free drinks?
Here’s the thing you didn’t know about Tsala Treetop Lodge: all the in-room drinks are complimentary. Yes, even the alcoholic ones. Whether you’re craving a mid-afternoon G&T or just want a snack while gazing at the treetops, the lodge has you covered. There’s something about an open mini-bar that makes the whole experience feel extra indulgent—like, “I’ve definitely made it” vibes.
Fancy dinner: Deep-fried brie and all
Let’s not forget the dining at Tsala. If your idea if dinner is a quick bite on the run, this is not the place for you. Fancy is an understatement and expect to dedicate a few hours to the long relaxed nature of dining at Tsala. With dishes like deep-fried brie topped with salmon mousse and a palate-cleansing pomegranate sorbet, you’ll feel like royalty. And no, you won’t leave stuffed—but you’ll leave impressed. The bread rolls with peppadew and oil, along with two kinds of butter, were the real stars of the show. I may or may not have asked for more rolls… no regrets.
Stay at Tsala Treetop Lodge & explore the Garden Route
Tsala’s location is prime. Smack between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, it’s the perfect base if you’re in the mood for some Garden Route adventures. Want a beach day? Easy. Fancy a hike? Sure thing. But if you’re like me and your idea of adventure is lounging in your private treehouse with a glass of wine, it’s also the ideal spot to do absolutely nothing. Either way, you’ll have no complaints.
A crowd with a British twist
During our stay, I couldn’t help but notice the lodge’s appeal to British travelers. It’s like a quiet escape with a touch of that afternoon-tea charm. So if you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere, Tsala fits the bill perfectly, with just enough international company to make for interesting conversation over dinner.
