So, here’s the scoop: I just got back from a weekend at Ivory Tree Game Lodge in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. It wasn’t just a bush escape but also a “work thing,” entertaining international business partners (yes, sometimes I do have to mix business with safari). But who am I to complain? I got to show off our wild side – all while enjoying a touch of luxury.
Location. The Pilanesberg Game Reserve
Let’s set the scene. Pilanesberg is basically the spot if you don’t want to travel far from Johannesburg and want the full safari experience without going anywhere near a malaria pill. This gem in the North West Province is a malaria-free, Big-Five-studded reserve and just a stone’s throw from Sun City Resort. Perfect for some wildlife meets five-star-lodge action without needing to venture too far out of civilisation.
Ivory Tree Game Lodge, a luxury hideout
Ivory Tree really knows how to do “luxury in the bush.” The rooms all have a massive bed, surrounded by mosquito or bug nets (honestly, I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud), each room has an outdoor showers, large stone bath, and those charming touches that make you feel like you’re living in a really well-decorated nature documentary.
And for the super luxe feel, there’s everything from plunge pools to private decks where you can lounge in your robe and watch the wildlife from afar – while staying comfortably far from the action, of course. They’ve got rooms for families, honeymooners, and the privacy-obsessed alike, all decked out in cozy yet chic safari vibes.
The Game Drives – Big 5 Goals
We hopped onto our game vehicle for the first drive and told our guide we were aiming high – Big Five or bust! I’m not saying we were entirely serious, but by some miracle, we actually managed it in two drives. Spotting elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, and buffalo was beyond epic, especially with a ranger who could make even the finer details like tracking prints sound riveting. And yes, I got all the photos – proof, or it didn’t happen.
But there’s more than just game drives. Bush walks are also a thing at Ivory Tree, where you learn about the plants, the birds, and the “small stuff” that you’d otherwise drive past in search of the big guys.
Activities, beyond the bush
If sitting still isn’t your thing, Ivory Tree has you covered with activities like drumming (yes, it’s a thing), a refreshing spa, and even the option to book a hot-air balloon ride. The spa was my personal highlight – nothing like a massage after bouncing around in a game vehicle to remind you of all those “luxury” bones you didn’t know you had.
The dining where bush meets gourmet
Ivory Tree really delivers on the food front, with meals served under the stars in an open-air boma or in their main dining area with views. Breakfast, lunch, dinner – they have it all, mixing African flavors with international dishes, so even picky eaters (yes, looking at you) are sorted. And don’t get me started on their open fire setup at night. It’s basically a whole mood.
Final Thoughts. It is worth every penny
The rangers, the food, the atmosphere – everything about Ivory Tree Game Lodge is top-notch. If you’re after a mix of thrills, wildlife, and pure relaxation, this is it. Plus, with rates around R3512. per person per night, including meals and game drives (at the time this blog was published in November 2024), you’re getting a lot for what you pay. Go on, book it – you’ll thank me later.
